Two Grade 12 students are to represent Cebu and the Philippines in the world competition.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak news team chanced upon the Grade 12 students with their coaches at the Mandaue City Hall for their courtesy visit to officials prior to their travel to the US.
The two students made it to the Top 8 in the national competition that earned for them their slots in the prestigious science global competition.
Karl Gian Abellana excelled in robotics. He has developed a drone incorporated with Artificial Intelligence technology beneficial in the detection of crop disease.
Meanwhile, Christian Paul Palacio has unlocked ingeniously further potential in the development of biodiesel using “darak” or rice bran, an agricultural byproduct.
The students and their coaches spent a year to prepare, develop, and harness the research projects.
Erlinda Parba, science coordinator of Mandaue City Science High School, said they are overwhelmed at the chance to move a step forward and reach the international competition where close to 2,000 students are expected to join.—GMA Regional TV
